about

The Oregonian's Marty Hughley called the short-lived band King Louie & Baby James "stellar" and "top shelf," and rated their performance at the 2005 Waterfront Blues Festival "exemplary." Later, Hughley's review of the CD of that performance recommended that music fans "Come and get it!" In his own CD review, the president of the Cascade Blues Association wrote that King Louie & Baby James' WFBF set "definitely falls in with the best of the festival's celebrated history."

The line-up started with Louis Pain. As a key member of the Paul deLay Band and Mel Brown's popular B-3 Organ Group, Louis led the local revival of the Hammond organ sound. And the late Sweet Baby James was one of the most soulful vocalists in the Northwest going back to the heyday of Portland's legendary Williams Avenue scene in the '50s. Filling out this exciting group were the soulful Renato Caranto on sax; Anthony Jones, arguably the top young drummer in Portland; and legendary studio guitarist Eddie Martinez (Tina Turner, Steve Winwood, Mick Jagger, etc.). Special guest on piano that day: the late, great NW piano legend, Janice Scroggins.
